Carpet cleaning is one of the processes where chemicals and harmful disinfectants are used. With so much discussion of different methods of healthy and green living, it is imperative that your home remains free of harmful gases and other polluted materials. To ensure a healthy cleaning of your carpets, there are many methods that you can apply to avoid the use of chemicals and other disinfectants.

Some of the methods of green cleaning your carpets are:

  • Avoid using plenty of water: Many homeowners think that using a lot of water at the time of cleaning carpets will make them cleaner. On the contrary, using a lot of water during carpet cleaning can be harmful for the material itself. Your carpet should dry off completely within 12 hours of cleaning. However, when you use more water, it will take a long time to dry off, which will lead to the creation of mold. Along with this, you will be wasting excess water on the carpet, while cleaning. So, it is better to use only that much water, which is required for cleaning.
  • Stain cleaning with club soda: This might sound crazy to some people, but club soda does help in cleaning out many stains. Most homeowners complain of not being able to remove wine, coffee, and mud stains from their carpets. To remove such stains, you can pour a little bit of carbonated soda on the stain. After it fizzles out, blot it off with a clean cloth. Ensure that you do not rub the area at all as this will set the stain deeper and also damage the carpet fibers. You can repeat the process if you want. As this is only water, there is no need of rinsing.
  • Prevention: It has always been said that prevention is better than cure. Here also, you can clearly apply the same rule. Using different methods of minimizing the accumulation of dust and dirt particles in your house is unquestionably the best idea. You can use different types of doormats inside and outside the house. Doormats help in capturing the dust and dirt from shoes that can easily cause your carpets to get stained. You can also ask people, coming in your house, to remove their shoes before they enter the room. Using a vacuum cleaner once in a week is ideal to keep your carpets spic and span.
  • Steam cleaning with vinegar: This is one of the oldest tricks in the book of carpet cleaning. If you are using a wet cleaning machine, fill it with equal parts of distilled white vinegar and warm water, rather than using a normal cleaning solution, which might just be full of chemicals. Your home made solution will easily take away the stains. This will also disinfect and deodorize the carpet in no time. If you are worried about the smell of vinegar, then rest assured as the smell will go away once the carpet is completely dry.
  • Hire companies with green cleaning: There are many companies in the market like Lack’s Cleaning Services, which provide carpet cleaning with a greener touch. Use of different eco-friendly materials and equipment is one the special fortes of these companies. They have different programs that involve the use of energy efficient machines along with optimized usage of water, which help them clean the carpets in an environmental friendly way.
  • Disinfect with baking soda: This is one of the best ways of taking away murky odors from carpet. You can sprinkle baking soda (Sodium bicarbonate) on the carpet. This non-toxic powder will act as a disinfectant if you let it sit on the carpet for 10 minutes. After 10 minutes, you can vacuum the area and your carpet will be odorless. If you want, you can easily add crushed rose petals or lavender buds to the baking soda to give a nice fragrance to the carpet.

Cleaning your carpet the greener way is not only best for your house, but also light on your pocket. Following the above methods will ensure a better and prolonged life of your carpets.
